A.A. (Chuck) Roberts, Jr.,

March 31, 1927 — January 11, 2017

A.A. (Chuck) Roberts, Jr., 89 of Phenix City, AL, died January 11, 2017 at Phenix City Healthcare.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm EST, on Saturday, January 14, 2017, at Vance Memorial Chapel with Reverend M. R. Hamilton officiating. A family interment will follow at Lakeview Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends at Lakewood Baptist Church on Friday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 pm EST.

 

Chuck was born March 31, 1927, in Phenix City, AL son of the late Arthur A. Roberts, Sr. and Aggie L. Roberts. He was a faithful member of North Phenix Baptist Church for 57 years.

 

Chuck was the Executive Director of Phenix City Housing Authority for 38 years. In 1985, he was presented with an award in Overall Management from the Department of HUD for being in the top 10 agencies in the Southeastern United States. He served on the Phenix City School Board for 35 years, 26 as Chairman. In 35 years on the board, he never missed a meeting. He was Phenix City Young Man of the year. He was selected as Alabama’s school board member of the year in 1988. He was a member of the Phenix City Boy’s Club Board of Directors, serving as President for one year and coaching baseball and football. He was a member of the group that organized Little League in Phenix City and coached teams for 18 years. He was Chairman of the Auxiliary Board of the Salvation Army and was a member of the Rotary Club and Phenix City-Russell County Chamber of Commerce.  He was named Citizen of the Year by Kiwanis Club in 1990.

 

Chuck loved Phenix City and spent much of his adult life trying to make Phenix City a better place to live and raise families.

 

Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Billie Austin, and one brother, Gene Roberts.

 

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Peggy, his son, Kenny Roberts and wife, Cindy Roberts as well as a granddaughter, Kelli Roberts. He is also survived by one sister, Peggy Roberts Barnes and her husband, Ancil Barnes all of Phenix City as well as one brother, James (Slick) Roberts of Morgan City, Louisiana. He is also survived by 6 nieces and 2 nephews and a host of other loving relatives and friends.
