Mr. Stokes was born January 22, 1936, in Ellenville, AL, son of the late Abbie Jessie Stokes and Lela Mae Wilson Stokes. He loved to work, fish, and enjoy his family. Mr. A J knew pretty much nothing but work, working up until the age of 80! He was known to tell the younger guys to get out of the way, they were too slow. Mr. A J was still operating a grader and bulldozer, so he was not just sitting around. As his life’s work was building foundations for roads, he has laid a solid foundation for his family. We will remember his hard work ethic and his devotion to his wife of 65 years, family, and friends.
Mr. Stokes was preceded in death by his parents, Abbie Jessie Stokes and Lela Mae Wilson Stokes; two brothers, Bob Stokes and Pink “Jr.” Stokes; a son, Ricky Stokes, Sr. and a daughter-in-law, Carolyn Stokes and a grandson, Johnathan Jinright.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Hazel Conner Stokes, Phenix City, AL; two children, Donna Jinright (Donald), Seale, AL and a son, David Stokes, Phenix City, AL; two sisters, Lee Ella McLaughlin and Mary Faircloth; eight grandchildren, Brian Blakely (Anisa), Dustin “Dusty” Blakely (Alicia), Cody Blakely (Stacie), Desirae D. Frazier (John), Ricky D. Stokes, Jr. (Krystal), Brittany A.
