Mrs. Barbara Elkins Churchwell

Mrs. Barbara Elkins Churchwell, 65, of Salem, AL passed away Friday, October 28, 2022 at Emory Hospital in Atlanta, GA.

A funeral service will be held 4:30 pm EST Tuesday, November 1, 2022 at Philadelphia Baptist Church in Smiths Station, AL with Rev. Clay Duck and Rev. Donald Edwards officiating.  Interment will follow at Philadelphia Baptist Church Cemetery.  The family will receive friends Tuesday afternoon from 3:30 until 4:30 pm EST at the church.

Mrs. Churchwell was born May 27, 1957 in Columbus, GA, daughter of the late Roy Elkins and Dorothy Griggs Elkins.  She attended both Columbus State University and Troy State University, where she obtained her Masters in Education.  After college, she worked in the Lee County School System and retired after 23 years of service.  Mrs. Churchwell was a long time member of Philadelphia Baptist Church.  She enjoyed shopping and tailgating in Auburn, but above all, she loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Shirley Yancey and one brother, Bruce Elkins.

She is survived by her loving husband of 39 years, Jeff Churchwell of Salem, AL; two daughters, Kristy O’Steen and husband Allen of Salem, AL and Hope Cobb and husband Daniel of Smiths Station, AL; grandchildren, Cullin O’Steen, Camden O’Steen, Micah Cobb and Madalyn Cobb; a sister, Pat Montgomery and husband Richard of Salem, AL; as well as, several other extended family and friends.
