Lt. General, Benjamin F. Register, Jr. US Army Retired, 89, of Lee County, AL passed away August 5, 2019 at Arbor Springs Healthcare and Rehab Center in Opelika, AL.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 am EST on Thursday, August 8, 2019 Epworth United Methodist Church in Phenix City, AL with Rev. Grant Parker officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow at Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at the funeral home.
General Register was born June 10, 1930 in Columbus, GA son of the late B. F. Register, Sr. and Anne Barton Register. He obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree from Georgia Institute of Technology, where he played basketball. Later he obtained a Master’s Degree in Military Logistics, from the Air Force Institute of Technology. General Register proudly served his country in the United States Army for over 36 years until his retirement in 1987. During his tenure he served in both the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He was one of the last soldiers to come home from Korea and actually traveled with the POWs. Additionally, in Vietnam, he was in one of the last helicopters to leave and was instrumental in evacuating numerous orphans.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Anne Register Sanford.
He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Betty Day Register of Phenix City, AL; one daughter, Anne Glovier and husband Jim; two sons, Jeffrey Register and wife Julie and Richard Register and wife Malinda; grandchildren, Megan, Dean, Elizabeth (Tye) and Christopher (Pamela); great-grandchildren, Isobel, Sophie, Alice and Luca; several extended family members and caring friends.
