Bettie Gallups

June 4, 1941 — April 22, 2019

Bettie Bain Gallups, 77, of Phenix City, AL passed away Monday, April 22, 2019 at the Columbus Hospice House in Columbus, GA while surrounded by her loving family.

A celebration of life memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm EST on Friday, April 26, 2019 at Ladonia Baptist Church with Rev. Steve Faulk and Rev. Greg Hyche officiating.  A private interment will take place at the Ladonia Baptist Church Cemetery.  The family will receive friends on Friday one hour prior to the service at the church.

Mrs. Gallups was born June 4, 1941 in San Pedro, CA to the late Oscar H. Bain and Mattie Wall Bain.  She had worked as a RN for Dr. Harold Jarrell with OBGYN and Associates of Columbus.  She also served as Coumadin nurse for the Columbus Clinic.  Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Jim L. Gallups.

Crocheting was a passion of Bettie’s. She made countless afghans and baby blankets as gifts for friends and family. She crocheted hats for patients taking chemo at the John B. Amos center and, when the patients at OB/GYN and Associates complained about the cold stirrups, she made covers for them so the patients were more comfortable.

Bettie was a truly selfless person. Because of her servant’s heart and tremendous humility, Bettie chose to bless others in ways not obvious to most people. She loved fiercely, worked tirelessly and prayed endlessly. She was thoughtful and kind and always looked for the best in others. She was slow to anger and quick to forgive. She was a loving wife, a doting mother and a devoted friend, especially to her sister, Mary. Worldly things were not important to her but, rather, she placed great value on friendship and family. Once you became a part of her life, you became a part of her treasure.

She is survived by her daughter, Laura Gallups of Phenix City, AL, son, Dwayne Gallups and wife Terry of Phenix City, AL, her sister and best friend, Mary DeAngelis and husband John of Littleton, CO; two granddaughters, Mallory Nelson and husband Brandon, and Rachel Huffenberger and husband Ryan, and one precious great grandchild, Emmett Huffenberger, and one on the way, numerous other loving family members and many caring friends.
