Betty Allen Dobbs

September 30, 1924 — January 3, 2016

Betty Allen Dobbs, 91, formerly of Columbus, GA died Sunday, January 3, 2016 at her home in Lanett, AL.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 am Thursday in the Chapel of First Baptist Church, Columbus, Georgia, with Dr. James Elder officiating.  The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Vance Memorial Chapel in Phenix City, AL.  The Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Mrs. Dobbs was born in Columbus, Georgia on September 30th 1924, daughter of the late Leon Augustus and Belle Broadwater Allen.

An active member of First Baptist Church and the Elaine Hammond Sunday School Class and Young-In-Heart in Columbus, she also worked in the Food Closet and Meals on Wheels.  She was much involved in local educational and civic affairs.  During her children’s school years she was President of the Eleventh Street Parent-Teacher Association, as well as at Morningside Elementary; was a member of the Teen Tavern Advisory Council and Secretary of the Muscogee Council Mental Health Committee.  Mrs. Dobbs was still very active with the Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary.  Other past posts include Charter President of La Sertoma Club and Past President of the Altrusa Club, where she was District Treasurer and member of the AZO Social Club.  During her working years she was a licensed funeral director and office secretary retiring from Oak Manor Nursing Home.

Other than her parents she was pre-deceased by a son, Allen Leroy Dobbs, sister, Annie Allen White, brother, Charles Douglas Allen, niece Maria Allen and two half brothers, Leon and Thomas Allen.

 Survivors include two sons, David Glenn Dobbs of Richmond, Virginia and Steven Douglas Dobbs of Columbus, GA; three daughters Leslie (Monroe) Smith of Lanett, Alabama and Betsy (Joe) Young and Laurie (Ron) Avery both of Phenix City, Alabama.  Her twelve grandchildren are Bill Smith, Beth Leva, Lee Dobbs, Rod Dobbs, Adam Dobbs, Rachel Dobbs, Ryan Dobbs, Kimberly Alvis, Jennifer Scott, Amanda Davis, Heath Avery and Leigh Wray.  She was blessed by thirteen great grand-children Dylan Dobbs, Brooke Dobbs, Carson Leva, Sam Leva, Sarah Smith, Anna Smith, Isabella Smith, Brianna DeLarge, Sydney Davis, Ryland Scott, Parker Scott, Kate Scott and Rylan Wray.   Numerous cousins survive.

Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to Chattahoochee Hospice, 6 Medical Park North, Valley, AL 36854 or the Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary, 5201 Warm Springs Road, Columbus, GA 31909.
