Mrs. Betty Jo Self

Betty Jo Self, 89, of Hurtsboro, AL passed away Wednesday, October 28, 2020 at her home, surrounded by her family.

A graveside service will be held at 1:00 pm EST (12:00 pm CST) Saturday, October 31, 2020 at the Hurtsboro City Cemetery with Rev. Keith Turner and nephew, Stephen Gregg officiating.

Mrs. Self was born November 5, 1930 in Union Springs, AL, daughter of the late Thomas Eugene Gregg and Lena Frances Cheshire Gregg.  She retired from Alabama Power as an Office Manager with 20 years of service.  Early in her adult life she volunteered with the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts and later in life, she also volunteered at the local library.  Mrs. Self was a member of the National Good Sam’s Camping Club, a member of the Eastern Star and also Hurtsboro United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir.  She also enjoyed crocheting, crossword puzzles and learning about new technology.  Mrs. Self taught herself how to use computers, how to use Facebook and how to text in the last few years.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert P. Self; a sister, Dorothy G. Williams; three brothers, Melvin E. Gregg, Lorenz “Smiley” N. Gregg and Samuel P. Gregg; as well as a son-in-law, William Broughton.

Mrs. Self is survived by a daughter, Gwen S. Broughton of Jacksonville, FL; two sons, Robert “Bob” Self and wife Wanda of Columbus, GA and Gregg Self and wife Barbara Ann of Hurtsboro, AL; grandchildren, Justin Broughton (Tonya), Whitney Totty (Daniel), Victoria Anderson, Samuel Bassett (Ashley) and Jonathan Bassett; 13 great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Nancy Gregg, Betty Jean Gregg and Dolores Fleming  ; several nieces, nephews, extended family and many caring friends.

In lieu of flowers, Mrs. Self asked that donations be made to the Hurtsboro Cemetery Fund, P. O. Box 535, Hurtsboro, AL 36860.
