Betty was born February 3rd, 1933, in Slocumb, AL, the daughter of the late Ruby Lockhart Knight. During her younger years, her family resided in Florida where she grew up to be a strong-willed, caring, and nurturing young lady. She spent much of her time caring for others and looked after her younger brothers and sisters. As a young adult, she moved to Phenix City, AL where she met Clarence (Huck) Huckaby, and being the funny and sweet man he is Huck proposed with a ring from a bubble gum machine and Betty said yes. From there the two welcomed twins, Steve and Cleve, Stanley and their baby girl Tammy. She raised her four children, tended to her home, and provided for her family by working not one but, sometimes two jobs. Eventually, she retired at Fieldcrest Mills. After retiring Betty became a very active member of the Central Activity Center, where she enjoyed painting, ceramics, dominos, traveling, dancing, and the friendships she made. During her time at the Activity Center she met her second husband, Don, and the two of them enjoyed traveling throughout the United States as well as many overseas adventures and cruises.
Betty loved to be on the go and was the life of the party and absolutely loved to dance. But, above all else she was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her grandkids and great-grandkids were her pride and joy.
We will miss her and all the variety she put into our lives, but she will never be forgotten. Every time we look at one of her ceramic pieces or dance we will smile and remember her. We also take great comfort in knowing she lived her life with the motto of, “One day at a time, sweet Jesus.”
Betty was preceded in death by her mother, Ruby Knight; her stepfather who raised her, James T. Knight; her husbands, Clarence Huckaby and Donald Stevenson; four siblings, Ruby Grace Franks, Cathy Argo, Milton “Buddy” Lee and Grady Lee; two granddaughters, April Michelle Lee and Ashley Nicole Huckaby Phelps
