Beula Argyn Hunter Chadwick, age 101, died peacefully at Phenix City Health Care Tuesday morning. She was born February 12, 1914 at home to Woodsen Alstin and Ida Elizabeth Watts Hunter in Phenix City, AL. Beula graduated from Smiths Station High School in 1932. She married her high school sweetheart, Albert Chadwick, on December 1, 1933 during The Great Depression. Beula and Albert loved and cherished each other for 65 years until his death at 89 in 1999.
Beula held numerous jobs, whatever it took, to help support their family. These included: Dime Store Clerk, Cotton Mill Worker, Produce Farmer, School Bus Driver, Lunchroom Lady, and Beauty Shop Receptionist. Finally at age 50, her last employer was Sherwood Pharmacy where she worked for over 30 years.
Beula was a member, Sunday School Teacher, and Choir Director at Concord Baptist Church. Later in life she and Albert were active members of the Adult V Sunday School Class at Summerville Baptist Church. They also delivered Meals-On-Wheels together for over 25 years.
It is amazing that as a young girl, Beula’s Papa took her to the top of Summerville Hill to see the first airplane fly over Columbus. Years later, she watched T.V. as a man walked on the moon. What a long, interesting, and fulfilled life she enjoyed. How blessed we were to be an important part of it. She loved her family very much. Whatever life entailed, she never complained, was constantly busy, and as she always said: “I’m doing the best I can with what I have to do with.”
Left to cherish her memory are: Her only daughter, Linda Chadwick Hargett, Grandchildren: Barbara Hargett Davenport and husband Scott, Leigh Hargett Webb and husband Russ, Chad Hargett and wife Lorie, and Great-Grandchildren: Blake Davenport, Hunter Webb, Kathryn (Katie) Webb, Grace Hargett, Ella Hargett, Trey Padgett, Nancy Padgett Story and husband Ben.
A funeral service celebrating her life will be held 3:00 pm EST Sunday, January 24, 2016 at Summerville Baptist Church, 3500 Summerville Road, Phenix City, AL 36867 with Rev. Rob Goodman and Rev. Steve Williamson officiating. Pallbearers: Blake Davenport, Hunter Webb, Trey Padgett, Sterling Chadwick, David Chadwick, Mark Adams, Curtis Borum, and Norman Davis. The family will receive friends following the service. A private burial will be held at Concord Baptist Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations to Crawford Baptist Church, “New Building Payments”, 4503 US Hwy 80 West, Phenix City, AL 36870.
