Carolyn Owen Howard

July 28, 1909 — January 2, 2018

Carolyn Owen Mitchell Howard, of Fort Mitchell, Alabama passed away peacefully on New Year‘s Day at the age of 108 at Kindred Hospice in Columbus, Georgia.

Mrs. Howard was born on July 28, 1909, in Columbus, GA to John Mitchell and Sarah Stripling Mitchell.

 She was a lady full of grace who was blessed to contribute most of her life to her community.

 Among her many achievements, she received an appointment from a Governor of Georgia to Gracious Ladies of Georgia for her many civic accomplishments. She served on the Russell County Historic Society Board. She was a charter member of the Volunteer Fire Department in Fort Mitchell. She served on the Cemetery Committee for many years. She the oldest living member of the Oswichee Baptist Church. She was active in the Russell County Extension Service for homemakers where she gave demonstrations for the club including sewing, crocheting, cooking and baking.

 She was instrumental, along with Congressman (ret) Jack Brinkley, in the location of the National Cemetery at Fort Mitchell. She was a lady of true character.

 Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Howard, Sr., a sister Louise Mitchell Lindsay, a brother, John Whitaker Mitchell, and two sons Richard Howard, Jr. and Thomas Ledbetter Howard.

 She is survived by two granddaughters, Susan Howard Braud and husband, Leonard, and Linda Howard Ellis, and nephew, James Lindsay and wife, Mary, and a niece Sarah Mitchell. She is also survived by two great grandsons, Aaron Kirby Bottoms, SR and Richard Joseph Braud, two great, great grandchildren, Kiersten Ashley Bottoms and Aaron Kirby Bottoms, Jr., one great, great, great grandson, Connor Charles Colmenares, and a host of extended family members and church families.

 A celebration of life Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. at Oswichee Baptist Church in Fort Mitchell with Rev. Ralph Henderson officiating. A private burial will take place at Oswichee-Alexandria UMC Cemetery.  Online condolences may be shared at www.vancememorialchapel.net
