Carrie Mae Atkins Dudley

December 16, 1923 — January 14, 2020

Carrie Mae Turner Atkins Dudley, 96, of Crawford, AL passed away peacefully at her son’s home in Opelika, AL on Tuesday afternoon, January 14, 2020.

Mrs. Dudley was born December 16, 1923 in Corbin, KY, daughter of the late Oscar Monroe Turner and Nannie Greer Turner. Her family returned to Alabama when she was five where Carrie attended Baker Hill School in Barbour County and graduated as salutatorian. She married the late George Richard Atkins from Norfolk, VA in 1941 and lived in Virginia until 1954 when they moved to Hatchechubee, AL where they lived until her husband’s passing the next year. She moved with her children to Crawford and in 1957 married the late Warren G. Dudley.  ‘Mama’, ‘Aunt Carrie’ and ‘Grandma Carrie’ treasured spending time with her family. She was known for her love of nature and birds and enjoyed reading, sewing, painting, ceramics, dominoes, and rummy. Carrie loved music, especially from the big band era and Alan Jackson, and she was highly creative and often entertained by singing old hymns or children’s songs and performing little skits.  A longtime member of Crawford Baptist Church, she was a very humble Christian and in her earlier years was active with youth and children’s programs.  In addition to her parents, husbands, four of her brothers and two sisters, she was preceded in death by her eldest son, Richard Atkins and a grandson, Jared Barr.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Emmett M. Atkins and wife Shirlene, George E. Atkins and wife Julie; daughters, Jennan Atkins Phillips and husband Rick, Pamela Dudley Barr and husband Bruce, and Janice Dudley Sigler; daughter-in-law, Dorothy Atkins Robinson, one brother, Douglas Turner and wife Myrna Ruth; grandchildren, Mark Atkins, Alan Atkins, Elisha Atkins Carter, Michele Atkins Kerchner, Keith Atkins, Caleb Atkins, Joshua Atkins, Mason Phillips, Carrie Phillips, Chip Phillips, Chris Phillips, Kimberly Barr Havron, Rachel Sigler, and Amanda Sigler Lee,  numerous great and great great grandchildren, along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and church family and friends.

A private graveside service will be held at 2:30 pm EST on Sunday, January 19, 2020 at Crawford Cemetery with Pastor Steve Williamson officiating. The family will receive visitors afterwards at the Crawford Baptist Church Family Life Center from 4:00 – 5:30 pm EST.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Crawford Baptist Church or plant a tree in Carrie’s memory.
