Charles (Chuck) Delano Caldwell, 80, of Smiths Station, Alabama passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 24, 2017, at St. Francis Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm EST, on Saturday, January 28, 2017, at Vance Memorial Chapel. Interment will be held at Lakeview Memory Gardens and the family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home.
Mr. Caldwell was born on October 27, 1936, in Phenix City, Alabama to E. E. (Gene) and Lessie (Gray) Caldwell. Upon graduating from Central High School, Mr. Caldwell enlisted in the Army where he served his country for 8 years attaining the rank of SFC E-6. Upon his return home, Mr. Caldwell began a career with the Civil Service where he worked in the Department of Maintenance retiring after 20 years of service. Upon his retirement there, he began a third career working in the Stakeholders Department of the W. C. Bradley Company beginning in 1989 and retiring in 2000.
Mr. Caldwell was a simple man who loved his family, his cats, old TV shows, and Alabama football. In 1968, he met the love of his life, Mary Magdalene Fletcher. In short order, Mary became his wife and they had 27 wonderful years before cancer took her from him in 1996. While never blessed with children of their own, his nieces and nephews, along with many foster children, church children, and others filled their lives with love and joy. They were known by all as Uncle Charles and Aunt Mary.
Mr. Caldwell is predeceased by his beloved wife, Mary, his parents, his sister, Gloria Woodall and brother-in-law, Bill Woodall, his two brothers, Eldridge Caldwell, and D. Wayne Caldwell, and his nephew, Andrew (Drew) G. Woodall.
He is survived by his loving nieces, Ann W. Banaszak (Henry), and Amanda C. Woodall (Mitch), and his nephew, Charles (Chuck) P. Woodall. He is also survived by great nephews, John (Leigh) Banaszak and Colin Banaszak, great nieces, Chelsea Woodall, and Kaitlyn Woodall as well as his great-great niece, Marion Banaszak. Others include additional nephews and nieces, special extended family, Derek Hay and parents, David and Marguerite Hay, and many other caring friends.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Epworth UMC, PO Box 58, Phenix City, AL 36868 or PAWS, 4900 Milgen Rd, Columbus, GA 31909, in memory of Mr. Caldwell.
