Charles Ellis Varnes, 73, of Columbus, GA passed away Thursday, April 14, 2016 at St. Francis Hospital in Columbus, GA. A funeral service will be held at Vance-Brooks Funeral Home, 4048 Macon Road, Columbus, GA on Monday, April 18, 2016 beginning at 10:30 A.M. EST, with Pastor Kennith Savage officiating. The interment will conclude the service at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends Sunday, April 17, 2016 at the funeral home from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. EST.
Charles was born May 5, 1942 in Anniston, AL to the parents of the late Elmer and Elzora Pate Varnes. He was a Baptist by faith. He was a truck driver and worked for Golden Donuts. He was an avid football fan who loved Alabama Crimson Tide and Nascar racing.
Other than his parents, Charles is predeceased by his two sisters, Ethel Varnes and Marie Varnes.
Survivors include his loving wife of 49 years, Ann Varnes; two daughters: Tammy Hall (Emory) and Catherine Vien; five grandchildren: Kathy Howard, Brandon Howard (Cortney), Amanda Hall (Jim), Tiffany Casey (Steven) and Joshua Hall, all of which are from Columbus, GA; two sisters, Edith McElroy (Joe) of Anniston, AL, Jannie Hawthorne of Atlanta, GA; two brothers: Earl Varnes (Joyce) of Lincoln, AL and Dallas Varnes of Anniston, AL; one sister in law, Connie Erb (Wyatt), two brothers in law: Curtis Scott and Webster Scott, all of Columbus, GA; four great grandchildren: Aubrei Howard, Nevaeh Howard, Steven Martin and Patrick Carter; and numerous nieces and nephews. He also had two pets: Ala and Bama.
