Chris L Boyd, 74, of Ellerslie, Georgia passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 13, 2012 surrounded by his loving family. He had fought a six and a half year battle with prostate cancer. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, December 15, 2012, 2:00 P.M. EST at Vance-Brooks Funeral Home with Pastor H. L. Sheppard officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday, December 14, 2012 from 5:00-7:00 P.M. EST at the funeral home located at 4048 Macon Rd. Columbus, Georgia 31907. Chris was born March 28th, 1938 in Jayess, Mississippi as the second child of Merton and Eva Boyd, who preceded him in death. Chris served in the United States Army, Army Reserve, and Army National Guard from 1962 -1968 as a Specialist. After leaving the Army, Chris worked for several companies before beginning a 28 year career with the City of Columbus where he retired in 2006 as the Assistant Chief of the Columbus Street Department. Chris was an active member at the Church of Columbus and served as an usher and head of visitor follow-up. Chris is survived by his wife of 50 years, Marie Boyd. Together they have 2 children – a daughter, Lisa M. Davis, and husband Rex of Wetumpka, Alabama and a son, Lee C. Boyd, and wife Thea of Albany, Georgia. Chris is also survived by 3 grandchildren – Rebecca A. Boyd, Jacob C. Boyd, and Eva B. Davis. Other surviving family members include a sister, Irene Travis, of Jayess, Mississippi, and a brother, Aubrey Boyd, and wife Judy, of Summit, Mississippi. Chris leaves countless nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends in Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia. The family wishes to thank the amazing staff of Columbus Hospice, Dr. Andrew Pippas and his staff, and the chemo nurses at the John B. Amos Cancer Center for their outstanding care and compassion during Chris' six and half year struggle with cancer.Flowers are appreciated as are memorial contributions to the Columbus Hospice House and The Church of Columbus Vision Fund.
