Csm (Ret) Lowell F. Jergens

CSM (Ret) Lowell F. Jergens, 90, of Columbus, GA passed away on Saturday, October 23, 2021 at the Columbus Specialty Hospital. Funeral services will be held at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 2100 Hilton Ave, Columbus, GA on Thursday, October 28, 2021 beginning at 2:00 PM with Rev. Grace Burton-Edwards officiating. The interment will conclude at Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service in the chapel at St. Thomas Episcopal Church. In keeping with efforts to control the spread of COVID-19, social distancing guidelines will be observed and facemasks will be required.

CSM Jergens was born July 8, 1931 in Hutchinson, Minnesota to the late Lillian and Walter Jergens. He retired from the military after 23 years of service and was awarded the following decorations: National Defense Service Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Good Conduct Medal 6th Award, Air Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Purple Heart, Combat Infantryman Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with one silver star, Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 device, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Bronze Star (2nd Award) and with Palm, Vietnam Master Parachutist Badge, Armed Forces Honor Medal 2nd class, 4 Overseas Service Bars, 7 Service Stripes, Meritorious Unit Citation 2nd Award, Presidential Unit Citation, German Parachutist Badge.

CSM Jergens once again retired, this time from veterinary services, USDA, where he was a field coordinator involved in disease eradication in livestock. An avid parachutist, he was issued Century Card Number 414 by the then Airborne Association. He also holds Sport Parachute License D877 and was a past president of the Fort Benning Sport Parachute Club. CSM Jergens was a founding member and later team leader of the freefall team which evolved in what is known today as the Command Exhibition Parachute, the Silver Wings.

CSM Jergens is a member of the Society of the Vietnamese Airborne, a life member of VFW Post 665, and also a member of St. Thomas Episcopal. He is survived by his wife Norma and son Lowell Jr., both of Columbus, GA. The family would like to extend many thanks to his caregivers Anita Evans and Terry Ware and special thanks to Marty and Sandra McCann.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Columbus Hospice or Paws Humane.
