Donald Eugene Porter

Donald Eugene Porter, 93, returned to his heavenly home on January 7, 2015 after a valiant battle with a long illness. His devotion to his family and firm belief in God supported him in his struggle and ultimately gave him peace. A funeral service will be held Monday, January 12, 2015 beginning at 1:00 P.M. EST at Vance-Brooks Funeral Home, 4048 Macon Road, Columbus, GA, and interment will follow at Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday, January 11, 2015 from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. EST, at the funeral home. Donald was born in Illinois on November 18, 1921 to Tony and Cecil Porter. He spent most of his working life in Danville, IL, and worked for Bunge Grain Company. He and his wife retired in the early 80's and moved to Columbus, GA, to be close to their grandchildren. Donald was a former Marine and fought in the Pacific Rim in WWII. He was kind and soft-spoken, and always had time for his family and his God. He is dearly missed by his loved ones, who celebrate the fact that he is at peace with his creator. Donald is preceded in death by his wife of seventy one years, Mary Evelyn Clem Porter; son, Donald L. Porter; his parents; three brothers; and one sister. He is survived by his son, Rick Porter (Martha) of Columbus, GA; daughter, Marla Porter, of Columbus, GA; grandchildren, Michael Porter (Amanda) of Columbus, GA, Ryan Porter (Jennifer) of Columbus, GA, Tim Porter of Columbus, GA, and Toni Sue Porter of Albuquerque; eight great grandchildren; three great- great grandchildren; brother, Bob Porter; sisters, Joane West and Loretta Trumbla. He would want to give a special thanks to Rose Biggs who tirelessly and lovingly helped his daughter care for him during the long months that culminated in his death. The family gratefully acknowledges the fine staff of Gentiva Hospice whose constant support and caring staff made this journey easier for all. The family gratefully accepts flowers and prayers, condolences and memories are gladly accepted.
