Dorothy Dean Smith Durden, 83, passed away on Wednesday, June 19, 2013 at Parkwood Health Care. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 22, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. at Parkhill Cemetery with Col. Jim Wiggins officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday, June 21, 2013 from 6:00 – 8:0 P.M. at Vance-Brooks Funeral Home in Columbus, GA. Dorothy was born on September 11, 1929 in Phenix City, AL to the late James Frank Smith and Thelma Gissendanner Smith. Mrs. Durden worked as the Pay Master at West Point Pepperell Mill for many years from which she retired. She was a lifetime member at Second Baptist Church and was the score keeper for the Senior League Softball Team. Her husband Terrell Durden played on the team and they went on to win many World Championships. Mrs. Durden also loved to travel with family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her loving spouse of 64 years, Terrell Durden and daughter- in- law, Kimberly Durden. Mrs. Durden is survived by her two sons T. Wayne Durden (Janet Mapel) of Cataula, Georgia, Mike Durden and wife Lisa of Columbus, Georgia, one sister Retha O'Steen (AL) of Augusta, GA; brother-in- law Elmer Durden and wife Bonnie of Ellijay, Georgia and three grandchildren Kandyce, Christina and Chandler as well as several nieces and nephews. She was a loving and dedicated mother and grandmother who will be forever missed. Flowers will be accepted or donations can be made to Columbus Hospice House 7020 Moon Rd. Columbus, GA 31909.
