Dorothy Simons McElvey, 92, of Phenix City, AL passed away Sunday, August 31, 2014 at Phenix City Health Care in Phenix City, AL. Funeral services will be held 11:00 am EDT Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at Vance Memorial Chapel in Phenix City with Rev. Steve Williamson officiating. A private interment will follow at Riverdale Cemetery and the family will receive friends this evening (Tuesday) from 5:00 to 7:00 pm EDT at the funeral home. Mrs. McElvey was born May 6, 1922 in Columbus, GA to Charles Franklin Simons and Gula Mae Phelts Simons. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who was dedicated to her family and her home. She retired from Matthews in Columbus, GA; was a member of Tillinghurst Homemakers Club, Crawford Homemakers Club, a longtime member for 70 years of Crawford Baptist Church, former Sunday School teacher, choir member, song leader, and a member of the WMU; member of Alabama Farmers Federation, and past President of Dixie School PTA. She was a woman of great character. Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Charles Albert McElvey, Jr., three brothers and three sisters. She is survived by two daughters, Dorothy Ann Atkins of Phenix City, AL and Cordelia “Kay” Winberg and husband Paul of Smiths Station, AL Sister-in-law, Lillian McElvey Cumbaa of Marietta, GA. (4) Grandchildren, Patrick Stringfellow, Mark Atkins (Storie), Charles Stringfellow (Elizabeth), and Alan Atkins (Jinjer), (5) great grandchildren, Sydney Stringfellow, Sophia Atkins, Reed Gibbs, J B Gibbs and Emily Kidd (Will), (2) Great great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, church family and many caring friends. A very special thank you to all the staff of Phenix City Health Care for the tender love and care shown for Mrs. Dorothy McElvey. In Lieu of flowers, contributions are requested to the building fund at Crawford Baptist Church in memory of Mrs. McElvey.
