Mr. Paul Douglas Ivey, Sr. (Doug), 79, formerly of Myrtle Beach, SC passed away on Friday, December 8, 2023 at Legacy Reserve in Columbus, GA.
A memorial service will be held graveside at Forsyth Memorial Park in Winston Salem, NC at 11:00 a.m. on December 21, 2023.
Mr. Ivey was born in Burlington, NC on May 17, 1944 , the son of the late Earnest Paul Ivey and Verona McGowan Ivey Hester. He grew up in Winston-Salem and attended Gray High School. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy. After his service in the Navy, he worked at several companies but had the entrepreneurial spirit. Mr. Ivey started several companies himself, the last of which was a body shop and car rental in Jacksonville, NC, expanding to Fayetteville and Cherry Point before he retired to Myrtle Beach. He loved everything about living at the beach, especially fishing and the seafood. Doug’s other hobbies through the years were Wake Forest sports, shag dancing, and traveling. Most notably was Doug’s generosity to his friends and family, often spoiling his grandchildren with trips, such as cruises and World Series games, even when his own health prevented him from attending the games of his beloved Braves. Doug lived by the mantra of “work hard play hard” and passed this practice to his son and grandchildren.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sandra Beckerdite Ivey and a sister, Sandra Ivey Perkins.
His survivors include a son, Paul Douglas Ivey, Jr. and wife Michele of Columbus, GA; two grandchildren, Jack Ivey and Ben Ivey, both of Columbus, GA; a niece, Leigh Anne Blackburn and husband James of Naples, Florida and two nephews, Craig Perkins and wife Marjorie and Neal Perkins of Winston-Salem, as well as extended family and friends.
Donations in Mr. Ivey’s memory can be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in honor of his beloved niece and friend Majorie Perkins.
