Curtis Anne Sims, MD, 86, of Columbus, Georgia, passed away peacefully at home on March 29, 2023.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, April 1, 2023 at Vance Brooks Funeral Home, 4048 Macon Road, Columbus, GA from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. with the funeral service beginning at 11:00 a.m. A private burial will be at Glen Haven Memorial Gardens in Macon, GA.
Curtis was born in Greenville, South Carolina on January 19, 1937, to the late Dr. Prue Ernest Swords, Sr., and Ethel Rebecca Curtis Swords. After graduating as valedictorian from Liberty High School, she attended Agnes Scott College, where she earned a degree in Chemistry. She worked for three years as a chemist with the Coca-Cola Company, an experience of which she had fond memories. She then attended the Medical College of Georgia during a time when it was uncommon for women to enter the field of medicine. She graduated medical school as a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, the national medical honor society. She then entered the field of Anesthesiology, practicing for over 25 years. Curtis had a strong Christian faith and was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church.
Curtis loved gardening (becoming a Master Gardener), and would spend many hours in her yard, which was a beautiful showcase of nature. She also loved traveling and cooking, often creating her own recipes, which have become family favorites. She was a voracious reader, especially loving mystery novels, and would often read into the night if it was a good book that she couldn’t put down. As a lifelong dog owner, dogs were always a cherished part of her life. She loved to say that a person wasn’t well-dressed unless they had dog hair on their clothes. As a devoted and loving wife, mother, and “Grammy”, her family will continue to hold many precious memories of her. Although we grieve, we rejoice that she is now with the Lord.
Curtis is predeceased by her brother, Prue Ernest Swords, Jr. She is survived by her loving and dedicated husband of 62 years, Dr. William Graham Sims, her daughter, Melissa Sims-Stanley (Brian), and her grandchildren, Tommy Sachy, Sarah Sachy, and Madison Stanley.
Flowers will be accepted, but if one chooses, memorial contributions may be made to the Paws Humane Society, 4900 Milgen Rd., Columbus, GA 31907.
