Mrs. Ella Ruth Massey Burkes

Mrs. Ella Ruth Massey Burkes, 100, of Phenix City, AL passed away Thursday, June 29, 2023 at Orchard View Nursing Home in Columbus, GA.

A funeral service will be held 3:00 pm Sunday, July 2, 2023 at Vance Brooks Funeral Home in Phenix City, AL with Rev. Alan Griffith officiating.  The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 2:00 until 3:00 pm at the funeral home.

Mrs. Burkes was born May 30, 1923 in Lee County, AL, daughter of the late Oscar Lovett Massey and Ella Mae Martin Massey of Phenix City, AL.  She was a homemaker and a faithful member of Ladonia Baptist Church for almost 84 years, where she was a member of the Fidelis/Ruth Sunday School class.  Mrs. Burkes was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Marvin Tillman Burkes; sons, Marvin Wayne Burkes, Ricky Douglas Burkes and an infant son;  a grandson, Richard Scott Burkes; a granddaughter, Dixie Anna Burkes Franks Shiver; seven brothers, Layman Hertiss Massey, Rufus Clifton Massey, Clyde Lovett Massey, Jr., Eddie Lee Massey, John T. Massey, Herchel Fredrick Massey and Oscar Lovett Massey, Jr.; four sisters, Lula Mae Massey Blalock, Mattie Vietta Massey Curenton, Bertha Lucille Massey Thompson and Alma Earline Massey Anthony.

She is survived by her son, Donald Gerald Burkes and daughter, Linda Diane Burkes Reeder; daughter-in-laws, Ann Burkes and Trenda Griffith (Alan);  grandchildren, Todd Burkes (Syl) of Corpus Christi, TX, Ginger Guthrie Cloud of Cataula, GA, Nichole Burkes Hudson (Rodney), Charesa Burkes Danielson (Corey), Shane Burkes (Kim) and Jason Burkes (Megan); fifteen beautiful great-grandchildren; Breanna Burkes Maggart (Caleb), Jordan Burkes, Jackson Burkes, Hailey Cloud, Kendall Cloud, Kayleigh Hudson Simmons (Taylor), Erica Hudson Wilson (Jake), Madison Hudson, Deonna Franks, Amelia Shiver (Benn), Cole Danielson, Bailey Danielson, Adley Burkes, Ansley Burkes, and Capps Burkes; eleven precious great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
