Elsie Naomi White Hight, 96, of Columbus, GA passed away on Tuesday, October 18, 2022 at her residence. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 26, 2022 from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Vance Brooks Funeral Home, 4048 Macon Road, Columbus, GA. A private service is being held.
Elsie was the sole survivor of 11 children born to William Riley and Blanche Agnes White of Cairo, Illinois. She graduated from Cairo High School in Cairo, Illinois and from Communication School in Crawfordsville, Indiana. Elsie married Robert Hartwell Hight of Karnak, Illinois in December 1945.
Elsie went to work at Fort Benning’s Engineering Division. Her last year was with the Contracting Division, before retiring in September 1989. Elsie loved Wynnbrook Baptist Church and was a faithful worker with the senior’s group and Lillian Harris Sunday School Class, serving five years as president of that class. Her work with the Joy Ministries (Columbus Baptist Association) was most important to her, as was 44 years in ABWA. She was a member of AFGE since her retirement, an active member of the Muscogee Civitan Club, and a member of Miles Ministry Center. She loved music and was an avid reader.
Other than her parents, Elsie is preceded in death by her loving and devoted husband of 57 years MAJ (Ret) Robert Hartwell Hight, Sr., son Lowell K. Hight, five brothers, and five sisters. She is survived by two sons: Robert Hartwell Hight, Jr. (Candy) of Arizona and Michael Alan Hight (Judy) of Columbus, GA; daughter-in-law Karen Hight of Anna, IL; seven grandchildren: Ken (Lacey) Hight of Canton, GA, Kimberly Hawk of Herin, IL, Kendra (Rodney) Seip of Anna, IL, Katrina (Conan) Scanlan of Wilsonville, AL, Kris (Michelle) Hight of Columbus, GA, James (Brandy) Hartshorn of Columbus, GA and Jennifer (Aaron) Jongeneel of Arizona; eleven great-grandchildren: Gabrielle, Ashton, Jacob, Kaetlyn, Keira, Payton, Dalton, Caleb, Owen, Katlin, and Robert; one great-great-grandchild; and close friend Larry Strickland; as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Rajinder Chhokar and Dr. John M. Henderson for faithful, loving care rendered to Elsie throughout many years.
