Mrs. Esther Newhouse Mcclure

Mrs. Esther Newhouse McClure, 90, of Smiths Station, AL passed away Friday, October 28, 2022 at the Columbus Hospice House in Columbus, GA.

A funeral service will be held 4:00 pm EDT Wednesday, November 2, 2022 at Vance Brooks Funeral Home in Phenix City, AL with Rev. Randy Comer officiating.  Interment will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola, FL on Thursday, November 3, 2022 at 1:00 pm CDT (2:00 pm EDT).  The family will receive friends Wednesday afternoon from 3:00 pm until 4:00 pm EDT at the funeral home.

Mrs. McClure was born October 25, 1932 in Cameroon, Africa, daughter of the late Darst Newhouse and Mary Johnson Newhouse. She spent the first 12 years of her life living in Africa with her parents, who were missionaries.  Mrs. McClure spent many years of her life as a missionary traveling to Guatemala.  She also worked as a bookkeeper for the University of Tennessee, as well as, working for the Boy Scouts of America and Liberty Bible College.  Mrs. McClure enjoyed crocheting, working on puzzles and collecting elephants.  She was a long time member of River of Life Church.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James M. McClure; a son, James W. McClure and a brother, Don Newhouse.

She is survived by two daughters, Mary K. Duke and husband Dennis of Royse, TX and Annette Sommers and husband Larry of Smiths Station, AL; two sisters, Lois Adams and husband Richard of La Mesa, CA and Jean Beisel of Farmington, UT; nine grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Ursula McClure of Ft. Walton Beach, FL; as well as, several other extended family and friends.
