Etta M. Dudley Gaylor, 82, of Phenix City, AL, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 28, 2016, at her home surrounded by her family.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am EST, on Saturday, July 30, 2016 at Vance Memorial Chapel in Phenix City with Chaplain Allison Owen officiating. A private interment will follow at Lakeview Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Saturday morning from 10:00 to 11:00 am, one hour prior to the service, at the funeral home.
She was the daughter of the late Virginia and Forest Moore and was born, raised and lived in Phenix City her entire life. Etta retired as a Civil Service employee after working 30+ years. She was manager of physician recruitment of general practice physicians for Martin Army Hospital at Fort Benning.
Prior to her illness, Etta was an active, engaged and vibrant part of her community. She was a member of Grand Baptist Church for more than thirty years where she taught Sunday School. As a graduate of Central High School, she served on the class reunion committee and always looked forward to catching up with old friends. Etta was instrumental in the founding of a social group called “Friends”, where she served as President. She later volunteered to chair the committee which planned the 25 year celebration of “Friends”. When her sons were young, she also served as Den mother.
In Etta’s leisure time, she retreated to her cabin on Lake Hardin, which was affectionately called “Spin Inn”. She was an avid skier and loved to be on the water with her jet ski, whenever she got the chance. She also loved to shop and thought QVC was the greatest thing since sliced bread.
Etta’s love of people was genuine and she cherished her family and friends. She is survived by her husband (also her high school sweetheart) James “Bobby” Gaylor; three sons, Larry Dudley (Leigh), David Dudley (Lori), Michael Dudley; one brother, Raymond Moore; grandsons, Logan and Levy Dudley; granddaughter, Ashley Dudley; great-grandson, Cristian John Watkins, several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Etta was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Rachel Dudley.
Etta’s family would like to express their gratitude and appreciation to Columbus Hospice and their caring and compassionate staff, who made her final days as peaceful as possible.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to Columbus Hospice or a favorite charity.
