Frances East Worthy, of Phenix City, AL passed away Monday, October 12, 2015 in Dublin, GA.
A graveside service will begin at 2:00pm, Thursday, October 15, 2015 at Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12 until 1 Thursday at Vance Memorial Chapel before proceeding to Ft. Mitchell.
Mrs. Worthy was born in Phenix City, AL on September 28, 1928 to the late Allen Benjamin East and Sally Hodge East. She was a loving mother and grandmother and deeply devoted to all her family. She was a life-long member of 1st Baptist Church and also attended St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. She was a member of the Amen Choir and the 1st Baptist choir and served as a Sunday School teacher for many years. She graduated from Central High School and was a drummer along with her sister, Doris, in the CHS Marching Band (the first of lady drummers). She was crowned the first “Miss Phenix City” and continued her education at Auburn University. Her professional accomplishments included working for the Phenix City Board of Education and weekly columns for the Ledger-Enquirer for over 18 years, co-owner and publisher of the Russell Observer, and Editor and writer for The Monitor. Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Z. Floyd Worthy, grandson Denny Lee, brother William East and sister Doris Harrelson.
She is survived by her children, Thomas Floyd Worthy and wife Donna, Vicki Worthy Blake, Patricia Worthy Baker and husband Kenneth, Carol Worthy Wilheim and husband Laverle, (Ret)Lt. Commander James Worthy and wife Laura, Kim Worthy Chancellor Call, Timothy Allen Worthy and William Daniel Worthy; sister, Mildred Durham; 20 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews.
