MSG (Retired) George William O’Brien, 87, of Fort Mitchell, AL passed away Friday morning, December 1, 2023, in the comfort of his home.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 pm EST on Thursday, December 7, 2023, at Vance Brooks Funeral Home in Phenix City with Rev. Ricky Ward officiating. Interment with full Military Honors will follow at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm EST prior to the funeral service at the funeral home in Phenix City.
Mr. O’Brien was born June 26, 1936, in Ogdensburg, NJ, son of the late James Francis O’Brien and Bertha Jane Losey Gunn. He served our country and was a highly decorated Vietnam Veteran of the United States Army retiring after 24 years of service. He was a member of the VFW Post 665 on victory Drive in Columbus, GA. After his service career, he started his own construction company, O’B Construction for over 30 years. He enjoyed bowling, bingo, gardening, art painting, traveling, playing softball #10, and bee keeping. At the age of 80, he was still tilling his own garden. His biggest love was his family from Jersey to Georgia. He was proud and best known as “Daddy George.” He had served as a Deacon of Sunderlin Baptist Church in Phenix City and loved singing in the choir.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wives, Betty Z. O’Brien and Vivian Stewart; brother, James O’Brien; sister, Frances Smith; brother-in-law, Bernard Smith, Jr.; daughter, Becky Lowe; and granddaughter, Glenda Loveless.
He is survived by his grandchildren, Denece O’Neal (Andy), of Phenix City, AL, Kimberely Young (Randy) of Fort Mitchell, AL and Dee Dee Simpson (Garry) of Phenix City, AL; sister, Agnes Howell of Rogersville, TN; brother, Harry O’Brien (Jean) of Juniper, FL; nine great-grandchildren, Jay, Adam (Alyssa), BJ, Paul, Justin (Shelby), Rebecca (John), Felisha, Georgia, and Colby (Kayleigh); 15 great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and many friends. Love to Verdi and Dee Braun “Hello Darling.”
The O’Brien family is extending an invitation for food and fellowship at the Fort Mitchell Fire Department Fellowship Center after the committal service at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery Thursday afternoon.
