Geary Elton Edwards, 72, of Phenix City, Alabama died peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, June 11, 2023.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM (EST) on Thursday, June 15, 2023, in the Chapel of Vance Brooks Funeral Home, Phenix City, Alabama with Reverend Gary Kelley officiating. A private interment will follow in Lakeview Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until the funeral hour at the funeral home.
Geary was born November 20, 1950, in Columbus, Georgia son of the late James Myrlon Edwards and Alice Ann Cummings Edwards. Geary grew up in Smiths Station and graduated from Smiths Station High School where he was active in baseball, basketball, football, and track. His talents were recognized, and he was awarded an athletic scholarship to play football with Livingston University where he attended immediately following high school. Geary’s tremendous athleticism was passed on to his grandson, Brooks. Geary always offered his Grandson meaningful advice and pointers and proudly attended and cheered for Brooks whether he was playing on the field for Little League, travel ball games, or on a basketball court.
Geary retired from Uniroyal Goodrich after 35 years of committed service and impeccable work ethic. Always the consummate provider, he then joined Home Depot, a job he enjoyed every day because of the interaction with customers. Geary always loved helping others and providing useful advice and tips. He worked with Home Depot for 10 years.
Alabama football was his passion, and he often hosted game day fun with family and friends. Geary owned every piece of Alabama memorabilia and was often decked out in Alabama attire. Geary also took great pride in keeping his yard and pool in tip-top shape, spending hours each week on both. He also enjoyed decorating for the various seasons and holidays, especially Christmas. His family often joked that he was the “Clark Griswold of Heather Court.” Geary also was an animal lover, and his pets were a favorite part of his family often receiving love, attention, and special treats.
Geary’s legacy is one of a hardworking man, who had a warm, friendly, and helpful personality, who loved his family, and experienced a renewed relationship with our Lord and Savior.
Mr. Edwards was preceded in death by his parents, James and Alice Ann Edwards and a sister, Scherita Edwards.
