George Denton Travis

George Denton Travis, 76, of Smiths Station, AL passed away late Saturday evening, June 8, 2019 at the Bethany Hospice House in Auburn, AL while surrounded by his loving family.

A celebration of life memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm EST on Saturday, June 15, 2019 at Vance Brooks Funeral Home in Phenix City.  His loving family will hold a private interment ceremony at nearer future date.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the memorial service on Saturday at the funeral home in Phenix City.

Mr. Travis was born January 19, 1943 in Columbus, GA to the late Lance Travis and Oma Clyde Scarbrough Travis.  He was employed with United Life Insurance Company for many years.  George also owned a Little Debbie Snack Cake route for ten years, and he was a school bus driver for Beulah School for ten years and then retired.  He was an avid golfer, enjoyed restoring old classic cars, and he was a member of the Model A Car Club.  He had a great love and passion for building, and teaching flight with ultra-lite aircraft; he also liked sky diving and had somewhere around 400 jumps from planes.  George enjoyed nature, the beautiful sky, the freedom of flight, and the peace of the lakes and oceans.  He was a Baptist by faith.  Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Annie Pearl Brown, brother, Johnny Ray Travis, and a grandson, Steven Shane Hyde.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of almost 50 years, Ann Hudson Travis, his children, Stephen Edward Travis and wife Wendy, David Keith Waller, and Susan Kay Hyde, Denise Travis Campbell and Lynn Travis Kreie; two sisters, Bonnie Gilpin, and Alice Garner, one brother, Irvin Travis and wife Edith, (6) grandchildren, Amanda Maholick (Mark), Ashlee Waller Turner, Shannon Hyde, Alexandria Travis, Bradley Travis, and Trea Wenck, (5) great grandchildren, Kynzlee Waller, Kolby Waller, Dominic Swain, Madeline Maholick, and Matthew Maholick, his beloved pet dogs, Maggie and Roscoe, numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and many caring friends.

Flowers are welcome or donations may be made to your local humane society or animal shelter for their loving care and needs in memory of Mr. George Denton Travis.
