Helen Marie Spear

Helen Marie Courtney Spear, age 87 from Phenix City AL, went to her eternal home with Jesus on April 12, 2021.
The family will receive friends from 6pm to 8pm (EST) on Wednesday April 14th 2021 at Vance Brooks Funeral Home in Phenix City, AL. Graveside services will be held on Thursday April 15th 2021 at 11am (EST) in Lakeview Memorial Gardens with Rev. Dean Knipe officiating.
Helen was born September 13th 1933 to the late William Alvin Courtney and Nellie Fay Miller Courtney in Plattin MO where she graduated high school. She later moved to Phenix City and started a career that spanned more than three decades at the Sunshine Biscuit plant in Columbus GA as a packer. Helen was a faithful member of Providence Baptist Church for many years serving in various ministries. She was an outstanding cook and baker; her specialties were Red Velvet and Peanut Butter cakes. Helen enjoyed shopping and loved watching her grandchildren play ball and swim in the pool that was built specifically for her “babies” to enjoy.
Helen was deeply loved by all who knew her, and her love was unique. God must have given Helen to us to make everyone’s life complete, to make us well rounded, and better human beings. She has been a shining example of a Christian woman, wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Helen is survived by her Husband of 44 years Lamar Spear, six children, Deborah Jones (Johnny), Arlington, TN, Ricky Allen (Linda), Valley, AL, Ronnie Allen (Cheryl), Crawford, AL, Jeffery Spear (Lou Jean), Phenix City, AL, Terri Atzbach, Phenix City, AL, Cynthia Ovdenk (Johnny), Chipley, FL; three sisters, Betty Allen, Diane Tindall, Carol Chason (Henry); 13 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, William and Nellie Courtney; four brothers, William Courtney Jr, Frankie Courtney, Hugh Courtney, David Courtney; and her grandson Christopher Allen.
