Hugh Lamar Spear, 84, of Phenix City, AL died at his home on Friday, April 26, 2024 with his family by his side.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM (EST) on Wednesday, May 1, 2024 in the Chapel of Vance Brooks Funeral Home, Phenix City, AL. Interment will follow in Lakeview Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until the funeral hour on Wednesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Spear was born December 02, 1939 in Phenix City, AL son of the late James Spear and Nellie Morgan Spear; however he was raised by his uncle and aunt, Wilkie and Willie Harrington. He had retired from Kellog’s (Sunshine) after 47 years of committed service as a machinist, and he served as the Bakers Union President for four years. Mr. Spear was an avid Alabama Football Fan and enjoyed game day fun with family and friends. He was also a mechanic who could fix just about any car motor he worked on. Mr. Spear also loved Fords and especially his 1964 ½ Mustang. His love of cars was also expressed in his passion for NASCAR. His favorite driver was Rusty Wallace. Oh, the fun times we as a family enjoyed with him. We will have a tender spot in our hearts when we watch Alabama Football or NASCAR, but we will also smile as we remember the times he was there with us.
Mr. Spear was preceded in death by his parents, James and Nellie Spear; wife, Helen Marie Courtney Spear; two grandsons, Chris Allen and Nikki Vanwright.
Survivors include three sons, Jeffrey “Jeff” Spear (Lou Jean “Lou Lou”), Coleman Allen (Linda) and Ronald Allen (Cheryl); three daughters, Cynthia Ovdenk (Johnny), Teresa Atzbach and Deborah Jones (Johnny); a brother, Ronald Julian and three sisters, Joyce Kill, Betty Clark and Brenda Trivett; fifteen grandchildren, Christie, Jay, Matthew, Tamara, Tabatha, Shaun, Brandi, Amanda, Candice, Christine, Kelsey, Jeffrey, Havana, Suede, Brett; seventeen great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and friends
