James Alton Helms

James “Jim” Alton Helms, 77, Columbus, GA, Passed away peacefully, Tuesday, April 15, 2014.

Services will be held at a later date, according to Vance-Brooks Funeral Home.

James Alton Helms was born August 26, 1936 son of the late James Kyle Helms and Betty Lois Helms, in Clarksdale, MS. Jim’s parents were sharecroppers, from an early age Jim was picking cotton and helping his parents succeed. His dedicated drive and hard work made James an exceptional man. He always had a spark of creativity and originality about him. Jim was also an honorable man that loved his country; he served in the United States Air force. He later became a meterolisgt for the civil service. After retiring from civil service, He worked for Columbus Muscogee County School System. Jim worked diligently with the other members and together they accomplished many goals for the county schools. He became president of the PTA, at this time Columbus was recognized as top PTA in the state of Georgia. He also was responsible for having air-conditioning installed in the schools for the students comfort.

Other than his parents Jim is preceded in death by his brother.

Jim leaves behind his loving wife of forty four wonderful years, Linda Dee Helms, their daughter, Linda Christian Helms, of Columbus, GA; four sisters, Marette Carpenter, (Thurman), of Clarksdale, MS. Betty Rooker, Sharon Helms and Rita Helms, all of Memphis, TN; two brother in laws, Doug Garrett (Mae) of Ridgeland, MS, David Garrett (Felicia) of Tupelo, MS; Jim is also survived by several nieces and nephews and caring friends.

In lieu of flowers the family request that memorial donations be made to Gentiva Hospice, of Columbus, GA.
