Mr. Bess, son of Sierra Elaine Shelnutt Bess and the late Hosea C Bess, was born May 29, 1971 in LaGrange, Georgia. He was a carpenter by trade and Baptist by faith. James was a Mason. He was an avid sports fan, particularly Alabama Crimson Tide football. James enjoyed the outdoors, enjoyed trips to the beach, but most of the time you would see him on the golf course. He also looked forward to coaching Little League Baseball and Pee Wee Football, playing drums, listening to all genres of music, watching crime drama on television, and driving his BMW cars. The family remembers him as a people person who would help anyone at anytime; an independent spiritual man; but most of all a Christian family man.
He is survived by his mother, Sierra S. Dudley of Phenix City; daughter, Jalynn Bess of Smiths Station, Alabama; three sons, James A. Bess of Phenix City, Dontrel Harper of Columbus, Georgia, and Jacob B. Bess of Smiths Station; one brother, Charles “Tim” Bess of Phenix City; four grandchildren; former partner, Tracy Bagley and her daughter Cori .
