James Oscar Flowers, 81, of Hamilton, Georgia, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family. Born in Tallassee, Alabama, on September 14, 1942, James led a life full of honor and love. A visitation to honor James will be held at Vance Brooks Funeral Home in Columbus on April 9th from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The funeral service will take place at the same location on April 10th at 10:00 AM, officiated by Rev. Jamie Snider. Interment will follow at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery in Fort Mitchell, Alabama.
James was a decorated soldier who served two tours in Vietnam, a testament to his bravery and commitment to his country. He always spoke fondly of his military career, which was one of his proudest accomplishments. He then transitioned to work in maintenance for the Smith Station School System for over a decade.
Beyond his professional life, James had a charming personality and unique quirks that endeared him to all who knew him. He believed in the power of Flex Seal to fix anything. James was a longtime member of the First Freewill Baptist Church. In his leisure time, James enjoyed going for walks where he would collect cans (even from his neighbor’s trashcans). His favorite activity was metal detecting, which he enjoyed as often as he could.
James shared a deep bond with his family and friends. He is survived by his beloved wife of 19 years Betty Sue Flowers of Hamilton, Georgia; daughter Vicki McFarlin and her husband Randy of Hamilton, Georgia; sons Jimmy Snider and wife Debra of Fortson, Georgia, Jerry Snider and wife Linda of Columbus, Georgia, Bobby Snider and wife Melinda of Columbus, Georgia, and Danny Snider and wife Susan of Hamilton, Georgia. He is also survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom he adored.
James was preceded in death by his mother Janie Pauline Welk, grandson Joey McFarlin, and brother Tony Flowers. The loss of James will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
James Oscar Flowers will forever be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his country, his endearing quirks, and the love he shared with those closest to him. May he rest in peace as his legacy lives on through the memories he created with those he loved dearly.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of James to Affinis Hospice, 2320 Double Churches Rd, Columbus, GA 31909.
