James Gardner

Command Sergeant Major James Gardner, 78, of Columbus, GA, passed away on March 20, 2025, surrounded by his beloved family.

A service with Full Military Honors will be held at Vance Brooks Funeral Home, 4048 Macon Road, Columbus, GA 31906, on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at 11:00 AM, followed by a Funeral Service at 11:30 AM.

James was born in Havana, FL, on September 25, 1946, to the late Emma Butler and James Gardner. After graduating high school, he earned an associate degree before embarking on a distinguished 28-year career in the United States Army, serving with honor until his retirement.

Two years into his military service, James met the love of his life, Inez Barfield, and together they shared 56 years of unwavering love and devotion.

Following his military retirement, James pursued his passion for upholstery and cabinet making, a craft he deeply enjoyed. As a devout Jehovah’s Witness, he lived his life with strong faith, integrity, and kindness. He had an infectious sense of humor, always striving to bring laughter to those around him. Whether working in his yard or lending a helping hand—especially to those in need—James found joy in serving his community.

He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

James is preceded in death by his parents, Emma Butler and James Gardner; his sister, Essie Bell McGriff Howard; and numerous aunts and uncles. He is survived by his beloved wife, Inez Gardner of Columbus, GA; his children: Erica Gardner (Willie Mearis) of Columbus, GA, Jason Gardner (Ashley) of Columbus, GA, and Gregory Gardner (Nanina) of Saint Cloud, FL; his grandchildren: Sariah Gardner, Zion Gardner, Jordan Gardner, Trinity Gardner, Christian Gardner, Amaya Gardner, Dale Brown, and Kristen Gardner; and numerous nieces, nephews and family friends.
