James Carey Thigpen, Sr.

James Cary Thigpen, Sr., 85, formally of Phenix City, AL passed away Friday afternoon, December 29, 2023, at USA Health Providence Hospital in Mobile, AL with his family by his side.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 pm EST on Saturday, January 6, 2024, at Vance Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Alan Griffith officiating. Interment will follow at Lakeview Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM until Noon on Saturday at the funeral home in Phenix City.

Mr. Thigpen was born February 15, 1938, in Phenix City, Al, the son of the late George C. Thigpen and Lucy Gentry Thigpen. Mr. Thigpen was an active member of Central Baptist Church, Phenix City, AL, and he served as a Deacon at First Baptist in Phenix City, AL and in various ministries. He had retired from Total Systems, and also worked for the Ledger Enquirer for 20 years as a printer. Mr. Thigpen enjoyed watching Auburn football, The Price is Right and Wheel of Fortune and spending time with family.

Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Patricia Ruth Pickard Thigpen; three brothers, Flea Gresham, Robert Scott and Charles Thigpen; five sisters, Lula Mae Scott Bland, Julia Scott Taylor, Lucy Gresham, Ernestine Thigpen Harrison and Patricia Thigpen Watson.

He is survived by two sons, Dr. James Cary Thigpen, Jr. and wife Laurie of Macon GA, and Bradford Jay Thigpen, Sr. and wife Vicki of Mobile, AL; a sister, Jeanette Thigpen Ashmore and her husband, David; seven grandchildren, James Brian Thigpen, Daniel Adam Thigpen, Cary Lynne Thigpen, Benjamin Martin Thigpen, Eliza Grace Thigpen, Jennifer Brooke Thigpen McPhearson and Bradford Jay Thigpen, Jr.; great-grandson Maddox Wade McPhearson ; several nieces including Katherine Marie Harrison, and nephews and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting to make a donation to the American Heart Association, at www.heart.org in his memory.
