Ethel Janice "Jan" Stewart

Ethel Janice “Jan” Stewart, 84, of Midland, GA passed away on Friday, May 17, 2024 at the Columbus Hospice House. A funeral service will be held at Vance Brooks Funeral Home, 4048 Macon Road, Columbus, GA on Wednesday, May 22, 2024 beginning at 2:00 pm with Columbus Hospice Chaplain Allison Owen officiating.  The interment will conclude at Parkhill Cemetery.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Jan was born on March 11, 1940 in Columbus, GA to the late Howard and Vela Collins. Jan was a hairdresser from an early age, following in the footsteps of her mother. She won several styling awards early in her career and owned several beauty shops throughout her life. Dr. Jack Hughston, well-known orthopedic surgeon, opened Hughston Sports Medicine Hospital in 1984, where he added a beauty shop for Jan. She worked there, alongside her daughter Darlene, until she retired in 2011.

Other than her parents, Jan is preceded in death by her husband Milton Stewart, sons Donald Baker and Steve Holt, granddaughter Michele Wahlert, brothers Robert Collins and Hubert Collins, and sister Sue Collins Hartz.

Survivors include her children Darlene (Lester) Wahlert, Marlene (Lee) Johnson and Bruce Holt; grandchildren Garrett Baker, Taylor (Hallie) Baker, Austin Baker, Michael (Megan) Wahlert, Alan (Stacey) Hooks, Ryan (Ashley) Hooks, Madison Holt, Bryce (Taylor) Holt, Abigal (Justin) Daugherty, Stevee (Chance) Dakes, Preston (Taylor) Kirk and Lange Stewart; 23 great-grandchildren; her loving companion Joe Willett; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family would like to extend their special thanks to Columbus Hospice nurse Stacey Hyleman, home care nurse Christi Lockett, Loving Hands Personal Care Services’ owner Renee Nelson, and Chaplain Allison Owen with Columbus Hospice. Our gratitude to these caregivers is deeply felt and truly appreciated beyond words.
