Jay N. Carter

October 3, 1945 — October 14, 2021

Jay N. Carter, 76, of Phenix City, AL, died at Columbus Hospice House in Columbus, GA on Thursday, October 14, 2021 with his family by his side.
The Funeral service will be held on Monday, October 18, 2021 at 11:00AM (EST) at Evangel Temple in Columbus, GA, with Pastor Jason Carter and Rev. Grant Collins officiating. Jay’s grandchildren will serve as Honorary Pallbearers as will members of the Abundant Life Sunday School Class. Interment will follow in Lakeview Memory Gardens in Phenix City, AL. The family will receive friends from 4:00-6:00 PM (EST) on Sunday afternoon at the funeral home.
Jay was born October 03, 1945 in Selma, AL, the son of the late Luther Carter and Ruby Carter. He was an active member of Evangel Temple Assembly of God where he served and worshiped. He retired from the Muscogee County School System after many dedicated years of service as both a teacher and a coach. He was an avid Alabama Football fan and an outdoorsman. Jay found great joy in sharing time with family and friends outdoors at his family’s property. He was a food-lover, that built a life around sharing a great meal with the people he loved…which was everyone.
Jay had a magnetic personality and never met a stranger. He was the master of nicknames, something that endeared him to everyone he knew. He loved telling jokes and playing pranks and lived for a good laugh. His great passion was being with his family and caring for the people in his life. He left a legacy of what it means to love simply in action, to care for the needs of others, to lighten hearts with joy and laughter, and to always make people feel special. We will miss him more than words can say, but his memory will continue to shape and impact us for generations to come.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Sylvia Riddle Carter, Phenix City, AL; three children, Shannon Prather (Adam), Jason Carter (Carissa) and Krissy Collins (Grant); nine beloved grandchildren, Jacob, Caleb, Anna, Brianna, Emma, Sara, Lily, Norah and Jase; his constant companion, “Baxter”; numerous nieces, nephews and friends also survive.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in his memory to Columbus Hospice at www.columbushospice.com.
