John Harley Evans, age 78, lifetime resident of Phenix City, Alabama, went to be with the Lord on Friday, December 4, 2020. Memorial services are scheduled at the Chapel of Vance Brooks Funeral Home, 3738 US Hwy 431N, Phenix City, Alabama, on Monday, December 7, 2020, 6 p.m. with Reverend Charles Keown officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
John, son of the late John Wallace Evans and Mildred Eunice Mercer Evans, was born April 12, 1942 in Columbus, Georgia. John and Judy were the original owners of John’s Lawn and Garden Center. He was a member of Lakewood Baptist Church; founding member of The Exchange Club of Phenix City, the local Arbor Tree Foundation, and The Golden Quarter Investment Club of Phenix City; and member of the Phenix City Chamber of Commerce. Everyone knew John as an all-around person. He enjoyed many sports, particularly minor league baseball, where he served as the Operations Manager of Golden Park. John was an avid Auburn Tiger football fan. He also enjoyed fishing, camping, and watching sports. John always looked forward to taking trips with his family and friends to the Tennessee mountains and the Florida beaches. His greatest enjoyment was spending quality time with his grandchildren and special friends.
Besides his parents, John was preceded in death by a brother, Ronnie Evans; beloved mother-in-law, Ruth Campbell; and beloved brother-in-law, Malcom Campbell.
He is survived by his wife of 58 ½ years, Judith “Judy” Evans; children, Tracy Evans Queen and her husband Ken and Tiffany Evans Cook; loving grandsons, Evan Queen and Ethan Queen; nephews, Ron Evans and his wife Amy, Keith Evans and his wife Mandy, and Ryan Campbell and his wife Rachel; sister-in-law, Sheila Campbell; honorary parents, Sam and Amy Wilks; many special friends including the Central High School Class of 1960.
