John Harvey "Red" Johnson

John Harvey “Red” Johnson, 89, of Phenix City, Ala. died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2016.

 

He was born February 8, 1926 in Phenix City, Ala. to John William Johnson and Iona Young. He had eleven brothers and sisters. He married Catherinell Parramore of Bonifay, Fla. in 1954.

 

Known to everyone as “Red,” he served in the Army in the European theater of World War II. After the war, he returned to Phenix City, where he worked at Idle Hour Park as the train conductor. He took up a lifelong vocation as a carpenter and flooring installer, working for various contractors around east Alabama and west Georgia. He was a loving grandfather who enjoyed cooking for his grandchildren and telling stories about his life experiences. He loved to build and repair things for his family, and he especially relished feeding the birds and squirrels at his home.

 

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Delmer Johnson and William Johnson of Phenix City, and Henry Johnson of Hamilton, Ga.; and two sisters, Eva Baker and Olia Pittman of Phenix City.

 

He is survived by five sisters, Francis Murphy of Midland, Ga., Maggie Johnston of Orlando, Fla., Dora Owens of Brooksville, Fla., Mariam Lamb of Phenix City, and Mary Ann Frith of Columbus, Ga.; a brother, Joe Johnson of Columbus, Ga.; five daughters, Janie Butler of Phenix City, Judy Hunt of Chesterfield, Mich., Patricia Hutchins of Smiths Station, Ala., Dianne Bruening of Westworth Village, Texas, and Teresa Johnson of Phenix City; eleven grandchildren, Daniel Maguire of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Rachel Goodson of Phenix City, Joshua Maguire of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Robert Hunt of Memphis, Mich., Reanna Hunt of Macomb, Mich., Denise DuBois of Phenix City, Cori Woodall of Havelock, N.C., Troy Bruening of Westworth Village, Texas, Catherine Bruening of Havelock, N.C., Chelsea Allen of Marietta, Ga., and Devon Allen of Phenix City; and four great-grandchildren, Lily Ruth Goodson, Andrew Maguire, Blake Hunt, and Kailen Woodall.

 

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. EST, Monday, Jan. 11, 2016 at Vance Memorial Chapel in Phenix City, followed by interment at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. EST, Sunday, Jan. 10 at Vance Memorial Chapel.
