John “Melvin” Scroggins, 82, of Phenix City, AL passed away peacefully Friday afternoon, November 9, 2018 at home surrounded by his loving family.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at Vance Brooks Memorial Chapel in Phenix City, AL with the Reverends M.R. Hamilton and Charles Keown officiating. Interment will follow at Lakeview Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home 1 hour prior to the service.
Melvin was born November 29, 1935 in Phenix City, AL to the late John W. Scroggins and Willie Hill Scroggins. He proudly served his country in the United States Army. He retired from Atmos Energy in Columbus, GA with 42 years of service and was a member of The Diplomat Club of Columbus since his retirement. He was a faithful member and Deacon of Lakewood Baptist Church for many years, where he sang in the Amen and Alleluia choirs.
Melvin was devoted to his family and his church. He loved listening to music, and especially enjoyed singing and touring with the Amen choir. He loved watching Auburn University football, and also liked playing tennis in his younger years. Never one to desire being in the limelight, Melvin had a servant’s heart and was always sensitive to things around him that needed to be done. He worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure they were completed.
Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of 56 years, Sherry Bankston Scroggins of Phenix City, AL; one son, Carey Alan Scroggins (Pamela) of Phenix City, AL; one daughter, Susan Scroggins Barham (Dan) of Vestavia Hills, AL; (5) grandchildren: Wendell Luloff, Alex Luloff, Leslie Luloff Peppers (Matt), Olivia Barham and Dashland Barham; (3) great-grandchildren: Peyton Nevels, Bentley Peppers and Maddie Peppers; Brother-in-law, Chris Bankston (Jan), and sister-in-law, Lyn Jones; many other loving family members, church family, caring friends and wonderful caregivers.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lakewood Baptist Church, 4011 Lakewood Drive, Phenix City, AL 36867.
