John Atlas Spivey, 87, of Phenix City, AL died at his home on Monday, July 15, 2024, surrounded by family and friends while under the care of Columbus Hospice.
Graveside Services with U. S. Air Force honors will be held at 11:00 AM (EST) on Friday, July 19, 2024 at Lakeview Memory Gardens, with Rev. Charles Keown officiating according to Vance Brooks Funeral Home, Phenix City, AL. The family will receive friends from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM on Thursday, July 18, 2024 afternoon at the funeral home.
Mr. Spivey was born December 06, 1936, in Brundidge, AL son of the late Leroy Spivey and Louise Johns Spivey. He was a proud U. S. Air Force Veteran. He enjoyed being a long-haul truck driver. He eventually retired from Ft. Benning where he was a driver.
Mr. Spivey was also an active member of Lakewood Baptist Church where he was a deacon and part of the music ministry for many years. His talent as a singer led him to meet his future wife at Holland Creek Baptist Church over 60 years ago. He had been called to the church as the Music Minister where his future wife, Phyllis was the pianist. As they say, the rest is history.
Mr. Spivey was preceded in death by his parents, Leroy Spivey and Louise Johns Spivey; a brother, Jack Spivey (Bernell) and a sister, Virgina Busch (Robert); a sister-in-law, Alice Spivey and a brother-in-law, Hugh Slappey; father-in-law, James McCurley and his grandmother, Minnie Spivey Adams.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Phyllis McCurley Spivey, Phenix City, AL; daughter, Deneese Spivey, Phenix City, AL; a sister, Josephine Slappey and a brother, Frank Spivey; a brother-in-law, whom he considered a brother, Leon McCurley (Debbie); special nephew, Marshall Spivey (Diana); other nieces and nephews, Kathyjo Gordon (Michael), Lisa Spivey, Robert Busch and Gary Spivey; three kitties, Cricket, Sasha and Tinkerbelle; several other family members and friends.
