John Wesley Stubbs, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on April 27, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and kindness. John was born on November 29, 1946, in Rome, Georgia to parents James Willie Stubbs and Victoria Rogers Stubbs.
John proudly served his country and retired as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army after completing two tours in Vietnam. He earned an Associates degree in accounting and worked as an chemical operator for Callaway Chemical Company. After retiring from the chemical company, he drove a school bus for Muscogee County for several years. He was a proud, dedicated, baptized servant of Jehovah. As a member of Jehovah’s Witnesses, he loved to share his faith with others. He was known for his warm personality - he never met a stranger and was friendly to everyone. Outside of work, he enjoyed fishing, golfing, watching westerns, and had a deep love for the Auburn Tigers.
Papa Stubbs will be remembered fondly by his surviving family members: his wife of 57 years, Bernice Stubbs; daughter Deborah Stubbs-Matthews of Newnan, Georgia; sons Wesley Stubbs and Christopher Stubbs of Columbus, Georgia; sister Lisa Stubbs of Rome, Georgia; grandchildren Alyssa Sanchez, Ethan Stubbs, Tristen Stubbs, Kira Stubbs, Anthony O'Baner Jr.; great-granddaughter Alana Sanchez; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and other family members.
In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by his brothers James Stubbs, Jewer Stubbs, Robert "Bobby" Stubbs, Thomas Stubbs, Samuel Stubbs; sisters Sandra Stubbs and Della Stubbs; and daughter-in-law Iris Stubbs.
The services to honor John's life will include a Visitation on May 3 at Vance Brooks Funeral Home in Columbus from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Friends and loved ones are welcome to meet at the funeral home on Saturday May 4 to go in procession to Green Acres Cemetery in Columbus for a Graveside Service at 1:00 PM.
