Leo D. Haywood, 88, of Smiths Station, AL passed away on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at his residence, surrounded by his loving family. Funeral services will be held 1:00 pm est Tuesday, March 10, 2015 at Vance Memorial Chapel in Phenix City, AL with Rev. Michael Greer and Rev. David Wilson officiating. Interment will follow the service at Lakeview Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home this evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm est. Mr. Haywood was born April 8, 1926 in Henry County, AL, son of the late Ben D. Haywood and Bessie Chandler Haywood. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Leo Dewayne Haywood and a brother, Theo Haywood. Mr. Haywood retired from Bibb Mill with over 35 years of service. He served his country during World War II in the United States Navy. Mr. Haywood spent many years with friends at the Loyal Order of the Moose and a dedicated member of Shady Wood Word of Faith until he fell ill. He is survived by a loving wife of 62 years, Mamie Thomas Haywood; two daughters, Gail Haywood Chandler and husband Rick of Phenix City, AL and Ceretha Haywood Willetts and husband Phill of Phenix City, AL; two sisters, Ann Adams of Dothan, AL and Agnes Jones and husband Nathan of Newville, AL; one brother, J. D. Haywood of Newville, AL; grandchildren, Charles Wayne Moore and wife Dena, Casey Moore Wasner and husband Michael, Trey Bullock, Kathryn Early and husband Ryan, Leo “Jay” Dewayne Haywood, Zachary Aaron Willets and wife Brittany and Jacob Andrew Willetts; great-grandchildren, Jeremy Moore and wife Destiney, Sidney Wasner, Jordan Moore and Cameron Wasner; great-great-grandchildren, Rayleigh Moore and Leo Moore and many other family members and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Columbus Hospice at 7020 Moon Road, Columbus, GA 31909. The family would also like to extend a thank you to special friends Earline Ponds and Alma Burford.
