Funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm EDT on Saturday, April 6, 2024, at Vance Brooks Funeral Home in Phenix City with Rev. Grant Parker officiating.  Interment with Military Honors will follow at Lakeview Memory Gardens.  The family will receive friends on Saturday from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm EDT, one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Mr. Obert was born April 7, 1934, in Columbus, GA, son of the late Lelon Obert and Leila Pearl James Obert Gibson.  He served our country honorably in the United States Air Force as a pilot and was a Veteran of the Vietnam War.  After his military career, he joined the Southern Company working for Alabama Power and retired after 15 years.  He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, and playing golf and his claim to fame was scoring two holes-in-one on the same round at Stillwaters Golf Course at Lake Martin.  In his school days, he was a band member at Jordan High School in Columbus, GA where that one special year, the Jordan High School Marching Band was invited to play in the Macy’s Day Parade.  But his greatest joy was sharing special times and memories with all his family.   He was a Christian and a longtime member of Epworth Methodist Church in Phenix City.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Vivian Hart Obert; his stepfather, William Walker Gibson; son-in-law William Gavora; and two grandchildren, Christopher William Gavora and James Andrew Obert.

He is survived by two daughters, Jill Gavora of Colleyville, TX, and Joy Skantz (Kevin) of Millbrook, AL; a son, Bill Obert (Becky) of Tampa, FL; grandchildren, Catherine Reyenga (Colin), Ryan Skantz (Amber), Julie Martin (Luke), Robert Skantz (Laura Ashley), Gracie Arnold (Justin) and William Winters; great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Reyenga, Everett Reyenga, Vivian Skantz, Madeline Arnold, and Caroline Arnold; several extended family members and friends.

Flowers will be accepted, or donations may be made to Epworth Methodist Church, P. O. Box 430, Phenix City, AL 36868.
