Luther "Buddy" Mortimer Reeder

April 14, 1937 — June 24, 2016

Luther (Buddy) Mortimer Reeder, 79, of Columbus, Georgia, passed away on Friday, June 24, 2016, at St. Francis Hospital.

Mr. Reeder was born April 14, 1937, in Roxana, Alabama, to the late Luther Lee Reeder and Sarah Janie Nichols Reeder.  Mr. Reeder earned a B.S. in Mathematics and a M.S. and Ed.S. in Mathematics Education from Auburn University.  He touched the lives of many students throughout the 30 years he taught math at Jordan High School.  He loved the principles of math and used math as a tool to witness to his students about Jesus.   In the course of his teaching career, he was asked by seven STAR students to share that honor as STAR Teacher.   He enjoyed the time he spent working on his family farm, and he especially enjoyed any time spent with his granddaughters.  He was a member of Wynnbrook Baptist Church and the Joyful Servants Sunday School Class.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 57 years, Patricia Hand Reeder of Columbus, Georgia; two daughters, Allyson Lee Reeder Moyer and husband Keith of Columbus, Georgia, and Karen Patricia Reeder Musick and husband Michael of Franklin, Tennessee; four granddaughters, Caroline Moyer, Brendle Moyer, Kathleen Musick, and Lauren Musick; two sisters, Araminta Reeder Hussey of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and Minnie Lee Reeder Barker and husband Edd of Roxana, Alabama; a stepsister, Judy Waldrop Tapley of Opelika, Alabama; nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his other children – his students.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Wynnbrook Baptist Church, in Columbus, Georgia, on Thursday, June 30, at 6:00 p.m. EDT with one of his former students, Rev. Joe Phillips, officiating. Visitation will be held following this service. A graveside service will be held at the Roxana United Methodist Church Cemetery, Lee Road 71, on Friday, July 1, at 9:00 a.m. CDT, 10:00 am EDT in Roxana, Alabama.

Those who wish may bring a single red rose to Mr. Reeder’s services.  At his request, these roses will be gathered and placed on his mother’s gravesite during his graveside service as his final gift to her.   In lieu of any other flowers, Mr. Reeder requested contributions be made to Joe Phillips Ministries, P.O. Box 6193, Concord, NC 28027 or to Wynnbrook Baptist Church, 500 River Knoll Way, Columbus, GA 31904.  Online condolences may be made at www.vancememorialchapel.net .
