Maj (Ret) James Joseph Pollock

August 16, 1936 — April 18, 2020

MAJ (Ret) James Joseph Pollock, 83 of Ellerslie, GA, died Saturday April 18, 2020 at the Columbus Hospice House.

A private service with full military honors will be held, at a later date, at Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery, according to Vance Brooks Funeral Home, 4048 Macon Road Columbus, GA.

Major Pollock was born August 16, 1936 in Canton, OH to the late James Hamilton Pollock and Martha Craig Pollock.  He joined the Marines at a young age and eventually enlisted with the U.S. Army where he received many awards, such as, National Defense Service Medal (1st Oak Leaf Cluster), Army Commendation Medal (1st Oak Leaf Cluster, Vietnam Service Medal w/2 Bronze Stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 Device, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/Palm (unit), 6 Overseas Service Bars, Combat Infantryman Badge, Air Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Good Conduct Medal, Army Commendation Medal (2d Oak Leaf Cluster), Armed Forces Reserve Medal, and Meritorious Service Medal.  After his retirement from the U.S. Army he was a High School JROTC Instructor at Hartsville High School in South Carolina.  Major Pollock was a member of Bethesda Baptist Church in Ellerslie, GA and a member of the Schofield Masonic Lodge.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Barbara Auckerman and Nancy Brown, and two grandchildren, Nikki Schlomer and Kyle Abernathy.

Survivors include his wife of 29 years, Charlotte Dennis Pollock of Ellerslie, daughters, Donna Surgenor of Atlanta, Lynda Rockel (Dan) of Newnan, GA, Sandy Willoughby (Blake) of LaGrange, GA, Sherry Abernathy of Ellerslie, GA, Polly Buckner (Greg) of Phenix City, AL, and Christi McClellan (Stacey) of Columbus, GA, 19 grandchildren, Zoe Reames, Chloe Reames, Caroline Reames, Amber Orr, Michael Willoughby, Brandon Willoughby, Matthew Willoughby, Lauren Willoughby, Braxton Willoughby, Savannah Bruce, Sierrah Abernathy, Kinsey Abernathy, Seth Abernathy, Summer Abernathy, Konnor Abernathy, Zach Buckner, Anna Marie Buckner, Mitchell Buckner, and Brock Buckner, and 13 great grandchildren.
