Marvin Reuben Smith, Sr., 80, of Salem, AL passed away on Wednesday, January 10, 2024, at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika, AL with his family by his side.
Mr. Smith was born January 1, 1944, in Columbus, GA, son of the late Marvin Edwin Smith and Della Reeves Smith. He was employed as a Master Carpenter with the Civil Service at Fort Benning, GA and later retired at Auburn University. He loved riding and breaking horses and had a special gift in his ability to shoe a horse. He enjoyed nature and was huge fan of the Alabama Crimson Tide. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grand and great-grandchildren. He loved his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and was a member of Philadelphia Baptist Church in Smiths Station.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Addie Mae Austin, Martha Barnett, and Duene Simmons.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 58 years, Betty Joyce Stockberger Smith; daughter, Shannon Smith McCain and husband Mike; and son, Marty Smith and wife Frankie, all of Salem, Al; sister, Maxine Williams of Phenix City, AL; brother, Charles Smith of Salem, Al; seven grandchildren, Dustin McCain (Kaleigh), Dillan McCain (Jamie), Dalton Smith (Alisha), Megan Smith, Sierra Smith, Cutter Smith (Brianna), and Katie McCain Atman (Gage); twelve great-grandchildren, Aubrey, Greyson, Damian, Liam, Roman, J’onn, Remington, Ruger, Delilah, EverLeigh, Wyatt, and Hunter, numerous nieces, nephews, other loving family members, and many caring friends.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 pm EST on Monday, January 15, 2024, at Philadelphia Baptist Church in Smiths Station with Rev. Mitchell Dean, Rev. Donald Edwards, and Bro. Ken Lott officiating. The family will receive friends for brief time just before the memorial service on Monday at the church according to Vance Brooks Funeral Home in Phenix City.
