Marvin “Wayne” Burkes, 75, of Phenix City, AL passed away peacefully on Friday, April 13, 2018 at the Columbus Hospice House in Columbus, GA.
A celebration of life graveside services will be held 11:00 am EDT on Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at Ladonia Baptist Church Cemetery in Phenix City with his friend, Jake Flowers sharing memories. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm EDT at Vance Memorial Chapel in Phenix City.
Mr. Burkes was born October 13, 1942 in Columbus, GA to Ella Ruth Massey Burkes and the late Marvin Tillman Burkes. He was the owner/operator of Wayne Burkes Construction, Inc. Wayne was hands on in every project he engaged in, he took great pride and dedication in his work. He loved square dancing and was a square dance caller for 41 years. He was a member of the Fountain City Twirlers and was a caller for the Twirlers for 26 years, and enjoyed playing the guitar, singing, and spending quality time with all his family and grandchildren. Other than his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ricky Douglas Burkes.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Ann Rutledge Burkes of Phenix City, AL, mother, Ella Ruth Massey Burkes of Phenix City, AL, daughter, Dixie Shiver and Mike Shirah, of Phenix City, AL, son, Scott Burkes of Phenix city, AL, one sister, Linda Reeder of Cataula, GA, and brother, Don Burkes of Phenix City, AL, sister-in-law, Trenda Burkes; (2) grandchildren, Deonna Franks, and Amelia Shiver (Benn Campbell), (4) great grandchildren, Shelby, Rhiannon, Daxton, and Emory, numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and many friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to Rett Syndrome Research Foundation.
