Mary Jon O’Mary Lisby, 84, of Columbus, GA passed away Thursday, August 25, 2016 at Columbus Hospice House in Columbus, GA.
A funeral service will be held at Vance-Brooks Funeral Home, 4048 Macon Road, Columbus, GA on Tuesday, August 30, 2016 beginning at 11:00 am EST. A private interment will follow at Riverdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday, August 29, 2016 at the funeral home from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm. EST.
Mrs. Lisby was born October 2, 1931 in Carbon Hill, AL, daughter of Walter O’Mary and Nell Elizabeth Lynch O’Mary. She retired as a Library Supervisor from Muscogee County. During her tenure, she had the opportunity to travel to Bolivia to establish a library in La Paz. She was a faithful member of Edgewood Church of Christ, where she served as the two year old Sunday school teacher for over 60 years. Additionally, Mrs. Lisby was active in many organizations; she was a member of the Georgia Gracious Ladies, the Southeastern Rock Club, the Southeastern Storytelling Association, the Blue Ridge Mountain Poetry Society, the Retired Librarians Association, the Retired Teachers Book Club and the University of Alabama Alumni Club. She loved the Lord and His church, her family, her friends, her animals, flowers, children, teaching, storytelling, people and jokes.
Other than her parents, Mrs. Lisby is preceded in death by her loving husband of sixty-one years, Carroll Edward Lisby; a son, Jeffrey “Jay” Lisby; and a sister, Sue O’Mary Hagan.
Survivors include her daughter, Nina Beth Reeves of Lawrenceville, GA; her son, Gregory Carroll Lisby and wife Rosemary of Roswell, GA; five grandchildren: Natasha Elizabeth Reeves, Luke Sanderson Reeves and Mark Davidson Reeves, all of Lawrenceville, GA, Melissa Matheny and husband Paul of Buford, GA, and Amanda Gray and husband Shayne of Roswell, GA; three great-grandchildren; many other family members and caring friends.
Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the J. E. Lisby Memorial Scholarship at the University of Alabama, The University of Alabama, c/o Bonnie LaBresh, Box 870172, Tuscaloosa, AL 35487.
