Mary Mercedes Burt

Mary Mercedes Stewart Burt, 85, of Pittsview, AL, passed away on Monday, December 2, 2019, at Magnolia Manor Nursing Home in Columbus, GA.

Mary was born November 11, 1934 at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, AL, to the late Lillian and Alexander Stewart.  Her school years were spent in Alexandria, VA, where her father worked at the Pentagon as an Electrical Engineer.  She received her BS degree in Physics and Chemistry from Madison College, now James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA, as well as her Masters of Education from Troy State University.

As a teenager, she met her future husband while visiting relatives in Pittsview, AL.  Mary and Edgar Lee Burt, Jr. were married in the Pittsview United Methodist Church in November, 1959.  They welcomed their son Edgar Lee Burt, III in 1961.  Mary was a member of the Chavala School faculty in Seale, as well as, the Lakeside School faculty in Eufaula, AL.  She retired from Civil Service employment at Ft. Benning, GA in 1998.  Mary enjoyed her membership with the Lewis Chapter, DAR, the Bluff City Garden Club, the Symposium Club of Eufaula and the Pittsview United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Edd and her son Lee, both of Pittsview, AL, as well as, loving family and friends.

A graveside service will be held Thursday, December 5, 2019 at 2:00 pm est (1:00 pm cst) at Pittsview Cemetery with Rev. Gene Chestnutt officiating.
